Islamic poetry is not merely artistic—it is a form of remembrance (dhikr), guidance, and reflection when grounded in truth and piety. The Qur’an acknowledges both harmful and righteous poetry in Surah Ash-Shu‘ara, emphasizing that poetry aligned with faith and good deeds is commendable.From the early days of Islam, poetry was used by companions like Hassan ibn Thabit (RA) to defend and praise the Prophet ﷺ, earning recognition and support from the Prophet himself.Across centuries, Muslim poets have composed Hamd (praise of Allah), Naat (praise of the Prophet ﷺ), Manqbat( praise for noble people) Manajaat (supplicative verses), and Sufi Kalam (mystical poetry), contributing deeply to Islamic spirituality and culture. The Origin of Naat
The tradition of Naat—poetry in praise of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ—has its origins in the lifetime of the Prophet ﷺ himself. Naat is not a later innovation; it is deeply rooted in the early history of Islam and is supported by authentic Hadith and historical events.

The poetry of Hazrat Abu Talib (RA) is among the earliest known examples of poetic praise for Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, even before the advent of formal Naat as we know it today. His verses were deeply emotional and powerful, written to defend and support his beloved nephew in the face of opposition from the Quraysh.

Hazrat Abu Talib’s Role and His Poetry
Hazrat Abu Talib (RA), the uncle of the Prophet ﷺ, was not only his guardian and protector but also a respected elder and poet in Makkah. When the Quraysh leaders demanded that he hand over the Prophet ﷺ or stop supporting him, Abu Talib refused to give in and responded with strong poetic verses expressing both love and defense for the Prophet ﷺ.

Famous Verses by Abu Talib
One of the most well-known couplets attributed to him is:

وَأَبْيَضُ يُسْتَسْقَى الْغَمَامُ بِوَجْهِهِ
ثِمَالُ الْيَتَامَى عِصْمَةٌ لِلْأَرَامِلِ

“The one whose face brings rain from the clouds,
A shelter for orphans, a protector of widows.”

This couplet praises the noble character of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, showing how he was already known for his compassion and spiritual presence long before the migration to Madinah.

Although Hazrat Hassan ibn Thabit (RA) is considered the first formal Naat Khawan in Islam, the poetry of Abu Talib (RA) laid the foundation for this genre. His poems were among the earliest to publicly praise the Prophet ﷺ, defend his mission, and describe his exceptional moral and spiritual qualities—making them a vital part of Naat’s early history.

Hassan ibn Thabit (RA): The First Naat Khawan
Hassan ibn Thabit (RA) was a famous poet in Arabia before Islam, and after accepting Islam, he dedicated his poetry to defending and praising the Prophet ﷺ. His eloquent verses glorified the Prophet’s character, message, and mission, and they were often used to respond to the mockery and slander of the disbelievers. He would recite Naats in the Masjid-e-Nabawi, and the Prophet ﷺ himself would encourage and praise him.

Hadith About Poetry in Praise of the Prophet ﷺ
One of the most well-known Hadiths related to Naat comes from Sahih Bukhari:

The Prophet ﷺ said to Hassan ibn Thabit (RA):
“Reply on behalf of the Messenger of Allah. O Allah! Help him with the Holy Spirit.”
— (Sahih al-Bukhari)

In another narration from Sahih Muslim, the Prophet ﷺ said:

“Hassan is defending Allah and His Messenger through poetry.”
— (Sahih Muslim, Book 45, Hadith 100)

These Hadiths not only validate the practice of praising the Prophet ﷺ in poetic form but also show that the Prophet ﷺ himself appreciated and acknowledged its power and influence.

“Tala‘al Badru ‘Alayna” — A Historical Example of Naat
One of the earliest and most famous Naats is “Tala‘al Badru ‘Alayna”, which was sung by the people of Madinah (Ansar) to welcome the Prophet ﷺ during his Hijrah (migration) from Makkah. Though its exact narration is debated, the event reflects the deep love and reverence the early Muslims had for the Prophet ﷺ, expressed through poetic verse:

 

“Tala‘al Badru ‘Alayna
Min Thaniyyatil Wada‘
Wajaba Shukru ‘Alayna
Ma Da‘a Lillahi Da‘a”

“The full moon rose over us
From the valley of Wada‘
And it is incumbent upon us to show gratitude
As long as someone calls to Allah”

Other Sahabah
Beyond the famous poet Hassan ibn Thabit (RA), several other Sahabah (companions of the Prophet ﷺ) also expressed their deep love and admiration for the Prophet ﷺ through poetry. Abdullah ibn Rawāhah (RA) was known for composing verses that inspired and uplifted Muslim armies before battle, using poetry as a spiritual and motivational force. Abu Dujānah (RA) would boldly recite Naats and praise the Prophet ﷺ even on the battlefield, demonstrating that devotion to the Messenger ﷺ was not limited to gatherings but extended to moments of great courage and sacrifice. Jābir ibn Samurah (RA) is remembered for his poetic praise of the Prophet’s ﷺ physical beauty and radiant presence, highlighting how even the Prophet’s appearance stirred poetic admiration. These companions show that Naat poetry was present and valued during the lifetime of the Prophet ﷺ, not only as an art form but as a sincere act of love, reverence, and spiritual connection.

 

Naat in Early Islam & Beyond
The tradition of Naat poetry continued to flourish after the time of the Sahabah, carried forward by great scholars and poets who combined deep Islamic knowledge with heartfelt devotion to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Among the earliest was Imam Hasan al-Basri (RA), a renowned Tabi’i and spiritual figure, whose poetic expressions reflected intense love and reverence for the Prophet ﷺ. Imam al-Shāfiʿī (RA), one of the four great Imams of Islamic jurisprudence, also composed verses that emphasized the importance of loving the Ahl al-Bayt—the noble family of the Prophet ﷺ—as a vital part of faith. One of the most significant contributions to Naat literature came from Imam al-Būsīrī (RA), whose legendary poem Qasidah al-Burdah became a cornerstone of Islamic poetry.
