Surah Al Lahab: A Chapter of Divine Justice
Surah Al Lahab, also known as Surah Al Masad, is the 111th chapter of the Holy Quran. The title “Al Lahab” means “The Flame,” while “Al Masad” translates to “The Palm Fiber.” This Surah was revealed in Mecca and consists of five verses and one Ruku. It is located in Juz’ 30 of the Quran.
The Story Behind Surah Al Lahab
Surah Al Lahab is unique as it explicitly curses one of the enemies of Islam, Abu Lahab, by name. Abu Lahab was a member of the Banu Hashim tribe and the uncle of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). However, he was fiercely opposed to Islam and crossed all limits in his hostility towards the Prophet. Due to his extreme enmity, Allah revealed this Surah condemning his actions and foretelling his ultimate doom.
